I use the Krowtann "Whitetail Deer Formula" Non-Pickle Tanning Process. Relatively Easy to Use with Nice Results. Order Through VanDykes Taxidermy Supplies. 1-800-279-7985 Item No. KWT200
There are Quite a Variety of Fleshing Knives. I Prefer the 16".

I use this "Birds Beak" Knife around the shop all the time. It's a very useful Knife. Knife is Scary Sharp. Holds an Edge well too.
This is the MOST IMPORTANT STEP in the Pickling Process; Checking YOUR pH LEVEL and Making Necessary Adjustments. Follow the Instructions in my Video. If you don't Follow the Instructions for pH Fluctuations, your Hide will not turn out. I cannot Stress this to you Enough.

Citric, Safety or Muratic Acid used for Pickling. I DO NOT Recommend using Muratic Acid as it is Very Dangerous. Safety Precautions and Protection has to be used in its Handling. I DO Recommend Citric or Safety Acid for Pickling pH Adjustment. Baking Soda for Neutralizing.

I Don't Use Vinyl Gloves. They Don't Stretch as Well, and the Sensitivity just isn't there. I Use and Recommend Nitrile Exam Gloves.

I've Found that a Bench Grinder with Different Wheels is very useful in Taxidermy.

Is the krowtann what was used in "Prepping animal skins wet tan 5 of 5"?
ReplyDeleteNo, it isn't. That was a brand I used before Krowtann. I have much better results with the Krowtann. - Rick
DeleteI'm just starting out and trying to find the best way to prep a hide for mounting. I really enjoyed the videos. So I would assume the same process with the krowtann?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you're starting to get into taxidermy. Let me direct you to a better video to start you off in taxidermy. It's a five part series. For the Krowtann, or anything else like it, always follow the directions on the bottle. Just keep in mind, if you use Krowtann, you can skip the separate pickling stage. Krowtann is a pickle and tanning agent in one. Much easier to use and I'm happy with the results. I'll put the link below. Let me know if you have any questions. - Rick

DeleteHi rick hope your doing well buddy once again thanks for the kind help I've got a question went and bought a bunch of goodies from the chemical store including ph kit :) but im alittle concerned with the alum i bought (1-alun de potas(şap) = potassium aluminium sulfate) and there was 2-(aluminum sulfate) apparently not the same, 1st one apparently leather makers buy? Have you got any idea or can you help please? thanks once again and if you have and is there an email address were i can attach photos of what I've purchased plus I'll attach photos of finished product �� have a nice day
