Any Questions? Just Email Me. Thank You. - Rick
Hi Rich,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experience. I would like to start my first mount. I have frozen the cape(s). After watching many youtubes I would think defrosting, fleshing and salting should be first steps. After I flesh and salt, can I put the cape back into the freezer until ready? If so when do I know it can go back into the freezer? When it is completely dry? Salt the cape before it goes back into the freezer?
I need the space in my freezer and have to get 3 deer heads out of the freezer. I would like to preserve the capes until I am ready to try my first mount. I have watched as many of your youtubes as I can find and I think I will try to tan the hide like you have without pickling because I think I will mess it up and loose the hair.
Any advice you give would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Jim
Jim:
DeleteGet the capes out of the freezer, defrost and flesh them. Never salt hides if they are going back into the freezer. Salt inhibits total freezing. After that, if you aren't going to tan them right away, put them back in the freezer. If you are going to tan, get your tanning products ahead of time and after that you can freeze them again. Before you mount, you can do all the detail work and be ready to go.
