  1. Hello Rick
I have 2 questions today well maybe 3, On the fish preservative you use the 50-50 water and denatured alcohol, can you use it over and over and how long? How did you come up with it as a preservative?
Tell me exactly what you use as a spray on sealer of your fish? I'm assuming you have no problem spraying on the acrilyic paints?

    1. You can use the mixture over again. I do. Just depends on how dirty it gets. I would say it could be kept for up to a year. I add some alcohol from time to time to keep the mixture at 50-50. I don't remember how I came up with that. I suppose someone told me about it.
I'm attaching a link below to the Supplies I Use page for Fish Taxidermy. You'll see everything I use, including the spray sealer.
      Thanks. - Rick

  2. Okay I see it now, Thanks a lot for the help once again. Talked to the Game Ranger today and I can buy a Deer cape any where from anyone as long as its legally taken and I have a detailed receipt. That's Oklahoma law.

    1. That's good to know, Charlie. So, you can get one from a deer processor then? Sounds like the processor you went to didn't know what he was talking about then. Go to a different one and see if you can link one up that way. Thanks for the info. - Rick

  3. Hi Rick
On the places that I use white Apoxie Sculpt on my salmon do I paint over each place with white paint or go over that particular spot with the color of that area? Side note I have 1 WT cape in the freezer.

    1. Blend the color over the Apoxie Sculpt which should match that area for the fish. Good job on the cape. - Rick

  4. Hi Rick,
Hope all is well with the knee replacement. Been praying for you. Have a question for you, I used an artificial head on this king salmon and I forgot I need tooth material and am in a bind. Do you have any suggestions without ordering from catalogs?
Hope all is well. Charlie Rogers

    1. You can use white latex caulk. Get a little on a toothpick, like a bead of it. Dab the caulk on the pick, get it into position and pull up. Practice on something else first. Don't use too much. It'll make a nice pointed tooth. This is how I do my fish. If you can't find white caulk, use clear and paint it.
Thanks, Charlie, for your good words. Sorry I didn't see your email quicker. I'll check this site a couple times today again. Just in case.

  5. Hi Rick!

I just wanted to thank you for all the videos you have posted! they are so useful!
I live in Alberta and I drove down to Mexico for the winter, going back in the spring and try to work on a few animals I hunted last year... of course with the help of all your videos, the first time I try shoulder mounts...
I was wondering where in Wyoming are you? since im driving back, I would like to visit you if you are not too far away from where we pass... just to say hi...
If you wouldn't like the idea or you are too busy, that's fine, you are still awesome!

Thanks! and hopefully we can meet!

    1. Thank you, Johnny. I appreciate all your kind words. It did take quite a bit of time and money to do these videos. It's great to hear they were useful to you.

That's quite a drive from Alberta to Mexico and back. But, the weather's got to beat Alberta this time of year.

Not that I wouldn't enjoy meeting with you, but, I never publish my address or any relevant personal information online. When I first started posting these videos, I found out the hard way that not everybody "appreciates" what I am trying to pass on here. I'll assume you know what I mean. So, I'll have to decline your great offer.

But, I do wish you well with those shoulder mounts you're going to do when you get back home. Just take your time. Learn from your mistakes. You'll make them, we all do. Do your best and that's all you can expect from yourself. Good luck to you and let me know how it goes. Drive safe. - Rick

    2. Hey Johnny! I just ran across your other email to me. Congrats on the great hunting season last year. Good job! I'll bet they turn out pretty darn good. You'll get plenty of practice with those three. I'm glad your wife is getting into it also. I've found that women taxidermists really have a knack for it. They seem better at the details that really make mounts come to life.

You're right about that being a long trip. You're covering a lot of boring territory.

Thanks for writing in. - Rick
PS As far as your comment of whether or not I remember people... you'd be surprised who I remember. ha. Shoot me an email and let me know how it's going. Love to hear from you.
PSS Good to hear you took your dog too. They're our best friends...
