Whitetail Deer Skinning for Taxidermy Video 1 of 16

  1. I have watched most of the videos on the whitetail deer mount and I just want to thank you for posting all of this, they have really opened up my eyes to taxidermy. I just have a question on the tanning process. When exactly do you tan the hide? Is this process done the day you skin the deer out just after the kill or can you freeze the skinned hide and save it for later. Also is it done before or after all of the flesching has taken place. Thanks again for all of this and have a great day................ Jason Mitchell

  2. Jason.

Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate them.

You can wait to tan the hides, just freeze it. Tanning is done after the fleshing.

Before you tan, make sure you salt the hide on the flesh side for a few hours. This will draw the juices out of the skin. Before you put on the tanning cream, shake off the salt. The hide will soak up the tanning cream better now that the juices have been drawn out of the skin.

Email with anymore questions. Thanks again. - Rick
